Advice on straightening hair

Here’s some top advice on how to get the best from your straighteners.
Apply straightening serum to your shampooed and conditioned hair. The amount you need depends on the type and length of your hair (see the bottle label for advice). Simply apply serum as you would gel or any other hair product, running it through your hair using your fingertips.
Start to dry your hair with a medium temperature hair dryer, brushing it using a paddle brush until the hair is completely dry.
If you have medium-to-long hair concentrate on one section at a time by separating it using hair clips. Start at the front running your straighteners through the length of your hair smoothly and quickly. Some section may require 2 or 3 strokes to straighten effectively. Work your way around the head repeating this process, always working from the top down the length of the hair and right off the end to avoid stopping mid way and kinking the hair.
When your hair is almost finish use your straighteners to style and blend the end of your hair. Simply remove the clips and run start the straighteners near the end and run off the end. The result will be gorgeous, straight, shiny hair. Just like you stepped out of the salon!
What type of hair do you have?
- Fine hair: lack of thickness means your hair is more susceptible to damage. Try a less abrasive straightener and use straightening serum to protect your hair.
- Medium thickness: you will want straighteners that can reach a medium temperature, around 140 – 180 degrees, which most can. Again, using straightening serum when using high temperatures will help protect your hair.
- Thick and frizzy: for this you need a high temperature for best results when straightening. Look for straighteners capable of over 200 degrees. Again, it is suggested that you always use straightening serum to protect your hair.
How often do you straighten your hair?
- Seldom, e.g. monthly: you can get away with buying a cheaper model of straighteners if you only use them infrequently. If you go for a metal-plate model, be aware that overuse can irreparably damage your hair – if you decide that you enjoy using your straighteners, upgrade to a ceramic model to ensure your hair is protected and looks fantastic!
- Normal, e.g. weekly: because you use your straighteners more regularly, it is important that you invest in a quality set. Ceramic straighteners do less damage to your hair than metal ones, so it is worth investing in some good ones.
- Heavy, e.g. daily: if you straighten your hair very often, it is extremely important to invest in a high-end pair of ceramic hair straighteners, preferably with ionic technology, to cause the least possible damage to your hair. Buy the best model of straighteners you can afford, because with this amount of use you might find lower quality models are more likely to break just before that important date!
What condition is your hair in?
- Good condition: if you want to keep the condition of your hair we recommend using straightening serum and buying straighteners with condition-preserving ionic technology.
- Reasonable condition: try to limit the frequency with which you straighten your hair, in order to prevent worsening of your hair’s condition. Use straightening serum and straighteners with ionic technology to get great condition back in your hair.
- Parker-Bowles condition: consider not straightening your hair to allow it to recover. If you absolutely must, use high-end ceramic straighteners with ionic technology to limit the damage of straightening. Use plenty of straightening serum.
